MANDATE OF TCZ
According to the Teaching Profession Act No. 5 of 2013, the Teaching Council of Zambia is mandated “to provide for the regulation of teachers, their practice and professional conduct and provide for the accreditation and regulation of colleges of education…”
Mission
Promoting and establish a disciplined teaching profession dedicated to the provision of quality education through accreditation of Colleges of Education, Registration and Certification of Teachers.
CORE FUNCTIONS OF TCZ
The following are the categories of the core functions of the TCZ:

- Accreditation of colleges of education
- Approval of teacher-training programmes
- Student-teacher registration
Regulation of teachers

- Practicing certificate
FUNCTIONS OF THE TCZ
The Council has fourteen (14) functions which are to:-
- Register teachers
- Regulate professional conduct of teachers
- Accredit colleges of education
- Develop, maintain and improve appropriate standards of qualifications
- Promote continuing professional development (CPD)
- Create awareness of protecting the public against unsound teaching practices
- Ensure that rules and regulations for professional ethics are responsive to the expectations of the public and those who rely on the teaching profession
- Investigate allegations of professional misconduct and impose sanctions as may be necessary
- Facilitate acquisition of knowledge by teachers through establishment of library and other facilities necessary to achieve that end
- Raise and sustain the character of the teaching profession and declare any particular teaching practices as undesirable for all so as to increase confidence of the public in teachers
- Create a platform for the communication and interchange of views on matters relating to the teaching profession and disseminate these views to the public
- Promote, protect and advance the general interest of teachers
- Collaborate with the teacher-unions on conditions of service and remuneration of teachers
- Do all such things as are necessary on incidental to the performance of its functions under this Act.
